Reflection Paper #1 Rhonda Carter Theology 104-D11 LOU April 15, 2013

I. Introduction This paper will be written to discuss the two topics I have chosen to write about for my first reflection paper. The topics I chose are spiritual gifts and love. When you start to think about it, these two things go together. If a person uses their spiritual gifts for the right reasons they will be doing it out of love for God. A lot of people these days do not use their spiritual gifts to edify God or to show the love of God to others. They are only looking for the praise of others to build their own self-worth. II. Part One: Spiritual Gifts a. Theological Definition A spiritual gift is a divine gift bestowed upon a believer from the Holy Spirit to be used to edify in the ministry of God. They are to be used within the body of Christ to allow the work of God to grow the church. A spiritual gift is used to give glory to God through the person with the gift. We are shown this in 1 Peter 4:10 where it says, “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” We are all accountable for how we use the spiritual gifts that God has bestowed upon us. b. Biblical Foundation There are a lot of books that have been written over what the different spiritual gifts are and how they are supposed to be used. There are quite a few verses in the New Testament that covers the spiritual gifts and how we are to use them. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-8 we are told, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the sane God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same spirit.” The Bible

Spiritual Gifts are granted by the Holy Spirit as He wills. There are many gifts that are all granted by the same Spirit to benefit the body of Christ (1 Cor. 2:4, 7). However, when referring to either the Gifts or Fruits of the Spirit, consideration is needed to avoid confusing their meanings (Towns, p. 306). In addition, the gift of tongues and its relation to the baptism of the Spirit are highly debated upon. This essay will discuss biblical proofs and the questions surrounding these gifts, plus reveal the “perfect” reward in the end.…

A spiritual gift is something given from God to benefit either the individual or community. This can be supernatural or “normal”, ranging from prophecy and healing to mercy or administration. The gifts can manifest themselves in a range of ways. One of these ways is through human talents. If an individual is gifted at explaining the scripture in a way even a child could understand it, that person could have the gift of teaching. However, not all spiritual gifts manifest themselves through talents. Some spiritual gifts are insanely supernatural and could never begin to look like a talent, such as the gift of tongues or healing. One interpretation of the idea of tongues is speech that is incomprehensible, so that would not look like a talent.…

God’s grace is a word frequently used to refer to “gift from God”. In many circles, it is theological defined as God’s unmerited favor (Hughes, 1998, Ryrie, 1963). Within this context, it refers to the divine favor that provides important lessons on how to live.…

    Charismatic Gifts Debate

For my research paper I choose the charismatic gifts debate because coming from a Pentecostal/Charismatic background growing up in church, I know a little about the gift. With growing up in a Charismatic church, I saw the gifts in action. There is a lot of debate on whether the gift is relevant for today or have they ceased from the church. One side says that the gifts are in the past and is not relevant for the day that we live in and another side says that the gifts are still relevant for today. There is one group that says that if you do speak in tongues, then you are under demonic control and are not really saved. Both sides of the argument use scripture from the bible to justify their means. In the grand scheme of things, whether or not the spiritual gifts are for today is not a salvation issue. Therefore we should be gracious when it comes to debating this issue. In Romans 14:5, Paul wrote “One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind.” (New American Standard Bible, 1960) As you can see, the bible leaves room for debate and the differences of opinion when it comes to the non-essential doctrine. The issue of whether the charismatic gifts is still around is still an issue that needs to be debated or not and needs charity from both sides of the argument. This is not an issue to divide the church over but many of them I hate to say has made chosen to make this an issue. I believe in my opinion that the charismatic gifts are still in use today. I don’t think that the gifts have ended with the apostles or with the completion of the bible. I will state the standard objection to the continuing of the spiritual gifts and then I will give what I believe is a basic but true evidence for the charismatic argument. One argument is that since we have the Bible we don’t need the…

Are all spiritual gifts equal in the eyes of God and what are their purposes to exalt God or witness to unbelievers? In 1 Peter 4:10 it states, "As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God". (1) In 1 Corinthians 12:4 it states, "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit." (1) These two verses imply the thought that all gifts are the same in the Spirit and they are made to serve others, not exalt God or ourselves. In 1 Corinthians 12:4, there are many gifts and only on Giver, this Giver may bequeath various gifts, which create a variety of effects. (4) This brings up yet another point, someone who doesn 't receive the power of spiritual gifts through out their life time, yet they have witnessed the Holy Spirit and have a close personal relationship with God, are they not as close to God as someone who has experienced spiritual gifts?…

To others it may be a belief from within a religion to guide them, or a personal experience that might set them on their way in a spiritual journey. It can be the desire to grow in wisdom, with honest self-evaluation you can gain inner peace. The Oxford English dictionary has many definitions of spirituality, however the first definition for spirit is ‘’intelligent or immaterial part of man soul’’ and the definition under spirituality is ‘’ given of spirit as opposed to matter’’. Spirituality is seeking a purpose or a meaning for one’s life, finding peace of mind and self-worth. The word spiritual can be found in the definition for health. In May 1983 Dr, Halfdam Mahler, in the world health organisation on the global strategy for health for all by the year 2000 said ‘’ the spiritual dimension may turn out to be of historical value’’. Since 1946 the definition of health that uses positive terms in the constitution identifies three dimensions, which are physical, mental, social and since 1983 spiritual was added. Looking after your spiritual health can be beneficial with or without addiction. Meditation can help relive anxiety and stress and can have a sense of…

A redemptive gift is the grace of God woven into who we are; that by His Spirit we are made right with God and able to honour Him with whom He has made us to be. There are certain common behavioural characteristics that are used to help determine the redemptive gifts (Primary and Secondary) of an individual. Although certain traits such as compassion may come easily for some gifts, we are cautioned not to use our gift as an excuse for not growing. We are all called to walk out the fruit of the Spirit whether it comes naturally or not. The redemptive gift teaching developed a connection with the many lists of 7’s in the Bible (7 things Christ said on the cross, 7 days of creation, and 7 pieces of furniture in the tabernacle).…

    Gifts of the Holy Spirit

    • 2618 Words

The gifts of the Holy Spirit contain a big role in the spiritual life of the believer. There are said to be seven gifts to around eighteen gifts of the Spirit to be brought upon those who believe in God. Each denomination has a certain gift that they focus on more then others. As Pentecostals believe that speaking in tongues is the ultimate gifts and thats what shows that a person has been filled with the Spirit, Mennonites dont focus on speaking in tongues at all. Each Gift of the Spirit has a certain use and person in the life of the believer. Some believers often confuse gifts of the Spirit with other things and get confused on when they have been filled with the Holy Spirit. No matter how spectacular, or miraculous, some of these gifts may be, not one of them can compare with the greatest spiritual gift of all - the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a very personal gift received by individuals upon repentance and baptism, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38). Those who receive God’s Spirit are His offspring, “And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:18). And fellow-heirs with Christ, “… if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint–heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” (Romans 8:17). The Holy Spirit enables man to understand spiritual concepts, “However, as it is written: What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard and what no human mind has conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the…

The Holy Spirit has endured much confusion over the history of the church some even minimize His purpose by downgrading Him to an undefined characteristic of God. As an important part of the trinity, the Holy Spirit is not an optional part of the tri-unity of God. He is an integral essential member in terms of His relationship to God the Father, God the Son, and humanity. The Holy Spirit in the original Greek is called the Paraclete which means one called alongside to help. This is exactly what the Holy Spirit does he is involved in the lives of every one that will accept him. He is that voice inside that most people like to call a conscience. The Holy Spirit is a Christian’s strength and wisdom, it is what makes a difference in and through a person. When Baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues God begins to truly develop in one the gifts that he has given to them. For the Christian the Holy Spirit and the developing of his gifts is their most powerful weapon.…

”Ang hindi nagmamahal sa sariling wika ay masahol pa sa malansang isda” is one of the most often quoted of Rizal’s writings. Why, then, did he write his two novels, Noli me tangere and El Filibusterismo in Spanish? In his dedication of theNoli me Tangere, Rizal wrote, “I will strive to reproduce thy condition faithfully, without discriminations.” Surely, the national hero of the Philippines was not somebody who said one thing and did the opposite.…
