ABSTRACT In order to be an effective team you must accomplish your set goals. To achieve this task a team must first discover and overcome the five dysfunctions of a team. According to Lencioni (2005), “Dysfunction #1 Is the Absence of Trust: Members of great teams trust one another on fundamental, emotional level, and they are comfortable being vulnerable with each other about their weaknesses, mistakes, fears, and behaviors. Dysfunction #2 is Fear of Conflict: Teams that trust one another are not afraid to engage in passionate dialogue around issues and discussions that are key to the organization’s success. Dysfunction #3 is the Lack of Commitment: Teams the engage in unfiltered conflict are able to achieve genuine by-in around important decisions, even when various members of the team initially disagree. Dysfunction #4 is Avoidance of Accountability: Teams that commit to decisions and standards of performance do not hesitate to hold one another accountable for adhering to those decisions and standards. Dysfunction #5 Inattention to Results: Teams that trust one another, engage in conflict, commit to decisions, and hold one another accountable are very likely to set aside their individual needs and agendas and focus almost exclusively on what is best for the team.” A team is usually a small group with anywhere from three to twelve people. Their responsibility is to share common goals, rewards and responsibilities. They should also be willing to set aside their own needs for the benefit of the team. In order for a team to really establish trust they must be risk takers, open and vulnerable towards each other without the assurance of being hurt and humiliated as an end

    The features of effective team performance are set out in Brian Tuckman’s phases of team development theory, ‘Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing.’ This outlines the phases that a team will go through in order to become effective and reach maturity. At the ‘Forming’ stage of team development individual roles and responsibilities are unclear and each member of the team is concerned to avoid conflict with each other. After each of these stages the team then reaches the ‘Performing’ stage which is where they are all working towards the same shared goal. This theory shows that for all teams to be effective each individual needs to be clear on their role, responsibilities and shared end goal.     When the off-site began she immediately started to work on creating team cohesion among the leaders of her company. She proposed a model that touched on five dysfunctions of a team. The model was similar to that of a hierarchal model in that a team needed to conquer one aspect or dysfunction of the model before they could effectively move on to the next dysfunction.     " Teams are group of two or more people who interact and influence each other, are mutually accountable for achieving common goals associated with organizational objectives, and perceive themselves as a social entity within an organization"(McShane & Von Glinow, 2010, p.234). Teams are needed for providing a service or making an important decision. Different organization judges the effectiveness of team through accomplishing the tasks, satisfying its members and maintaining team survival. According to McShane & Von Glinow the team effectiveness model consist of Organizational and Team environment, Team design, Team Process and Team Effectiveness ( p.239, 2010). In the team design, the elements that are needed are task characteristics, team size and team composition. Team works best when work is very complex and to accomplish the task team have to be highly interdependent with each other. For a team to be effective the members of the team must have more than technical skills and all the work should be performed in a team environment. According to McShane& VonGlinow the characteristics of effective team are cooperating, coordinating, communicating, comforting, and conflict resolving( 2010, p.243). In my organization we have developed a discharge team where different department leaders coordinate, communicate with each other to make the discharge transition easy for the patient and if there is any conflict that is resolved immediately. A survey is conducted with the patient to see the effectiveness of this process. As stated by McShane and Von Glinow team is developed through stages of forming, storming, norming, performing and eventually adjourning.
