It Would Be Different If By Maggie Mitchell Summary
The short story "It Would Be Different If" by Maggie Mitchell reveals the importance of point of view, such as how a story is told and to what extent are the details explained . Nikki, a young woman dealing with the bitter end of love tells her story as if she is directly talking with her ex lover, Jeff. In spite of rejection, Nikki frequently references to sentimental memories and disappointing case scenarios that often unveil certain details and emotions. In utter imagination, she describes a future with Jeff that could have been, referencing to the judgements they made in the past. Mitchell does exceptionally well in the representation of Nikki's portrayal of Jeff by focusing on her pain, obsessiveness, and sense of false hope.
