Once upon a time a battle between civilizations erupted. After the brutal war of World War II the United States and Soviet Union became two fierce rivals. Their rivalry became known as the Cold War. It was an ongoing state of military and political tensions between the western world, led by the US, and the communist world, led by the USSR. The event lasted from 1945 to 1991. During the war neither side acted upon military action, since both possessed nuclear weapons which would lead to their mutual destruction. Tensions between the US and USSR became evident when Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Josef Stalin met to coordinate a strategy against Nazi Germany. Roosevelt and Churchill agreed that Poland, invaded by Nazi Germany, should have the right to choose its own government while Stalin was determined to control the communist state. As the war continued both the opposing sides sought for global supremacy and the Cold War became the most politically heated war known to history.
During the Cold War the major goals of the United States included restoration of powers and containment of the Soviet Union. The first goal consisted of the US wanting to restore and rebuild the countries of Europe threatened by communism after World War II. The western world’s major aim was to stop communism from spreading. The second goal of containment was to reduce the ability of the USSR to develop power. This was to restrict the USSR from relying on communist parties. The US tried accomplishing this goal by establishing tensions among communist governments.
Goals of the Soviet Union included expanding communism and eliminating the threat of world war. By expanding communism the USSR wanted to spread communist control throughout all European countries. The Soviet Union feared nuclear war with the United States and therefore tried to reduce weapons of mass destruction....
