The Catcher In The Rye can strongly be considered a "coming of age" novel due to the main theme, which is about Holden, a young teenage boy lose to adult hood and struggling in many ways to accept it. Many situations and themes in the novel, such as different signs of immaturity at different levels, having trouble with accepting society and struggling with many issues, which he doesn't realize many of them, are reasons why the novel could be considered in this genre.

Holden's struggle with school is an example of how he struggles to come to terms with the adult world. He sees all the flaws that adulthood has when being surrounded by the situations and people in school.He sees pure phoniness, cruelty, and lack of individuality in school life as everyone considers themselves part of a group or else they are worthless, which is the way he sees himself. In the beginning of the novel when he's looking at the football game from above the hill by himself, he talks about all the hotshots being down there and him apart from everyone else. It is a way of him describing how he sees himself and the rest of the world socially, and how he feels he doesn't fit with it and how he disagrees.

Holden's lack of emotional strength and immaturity is also part of his struggle with becoming an adult.For example, whenever he feels uncomfortable with a situation or a thought, such as when he talks about his younger brothers death, when he is feeling lonely such as when he's walking down a lonely street, or when he is surrounded by people he feels uncomfortable with, he puts on his hunting hat, to feel and look different from the rest of the world as he mentioned and maybe also to protect himself in a way from his feelings due to his lack of emotional strength. He shows immaturity when it comes to sex, which is something everyone faces when entering adulthood, which is why he may feel so uncomfortable with situations that involve sex such as when he is...
