Ever since President Bush sent American forces in to Iraq, there has been huge debate on whether or not it is the right decision to continue to send troops overseas. While many American citizens believe it would be a better decision to return U.S. forces because of the time already spent overseas, American troops are still needed in Iraq for various reasons.
Even though Suddam Hussein is no longer in power, Iraq is not yet a stable country yet. President Bush wants “to restore order and bring prosperity to a brutalized society and an infrastructure suffering from decades of malign neglect”. In order to do this the United States military must keep some of their forces overseas in order to assist this country. If U.S. forces left the country it would be possible of a civil war breaking out in Iraq creating chaos in the country. Once they have some sort of defense and a stable government, American troops can likely return to the United States.
It is imperative that the U.S. keeps some forces in Iraq because the U.S. has not achieved its objective of restoring order to Iraq. According to the U.S. National Security Objectives: “If conflict in another country become necessary, know what the objectives are going in, pursue them with all necessary force, and withdraw when the objectives have been met”. Most Americans think that the U.S. has already achieved those objectives by eliminating Hussein; however the objective had changed once Hussein was eliminated. The U.S. will withdraw when the new objectives have been yet, but they have not yet been fulfilled.
Many American citizens will continue to be upset with the fact that their friends and family continue to stay overseas in Iraq. Once all of the objectives of stabilizing Iraq have been met, American troops will likely be sent home. Until that day, it is in the country’s best interest that U.S. forces remain in Iraq.
