Film Review
Dr. Zhivago

Dr Zhivago is a love story set in Russia 1950’s, during World War 1, the Russian Revolution, and the Civil War though a specific date is never mentioned in the film.
The film follows the life of Yury Zhivago, a poet and doctor, who marries upper class women that he loves, who is completely devoted to him. But he has a passionate love affair with another woman called Lara. Even during such turbulent times they seem to keep meeting as if they are destined to be together. Lara is the one who inspires his poetry.
I enjoyed watching this love affair unravel, but found it hard during the film to understand what was happening politically. Although you could see that there was major violence and social upheaval happening, I found it hard to grasp any actual historical information. I would not recommend it because it gave me very little perspective into the Russian Revolution.

Book Review
Russia in Revolution

This book gives you a brief summary of Russia in 1900’s: World War 1, The Russian Revolution and the Civil War.
It begins by giving details on how people lived in the early 1900’s and some background information on the Russian government. It tells you about how the different revolutionaries split up into the Bolsheviks, the Mensheviks and the Social Revolutionaries. The book goes on to describe the Russian Revolution in 1917 and about the first democratic election. There is also information on the Civil War, War Communism and the death of Lenin.
I found this book to be very interesting, easy to use and informative I would recommend it to anyone who was researching the Revolution.
