View Full Essay Mutaz Mahmmud   Professor: Richard Yunis   Date: 12/08/08   Sociology 120   Islam: A Way Of life.   The Islamic culture has many practices; amongst the most famous ones being the women cover themselves with scarves, to protect their modesty and adornments. Men are traditionlay known to wear robes, and the society is more similar to a patriarchy. Muslims do not eat pork and refrain from drinking beer as well. Muslims also are known not to date and have premarital sex, rather they encourage marrying young so that you could be saved from the sources of temptation that would cause you to commit adultery or fornicate. The sexes are separated in Islam for the most part; Muslims refer to it more as separation rather than segregation. They also have religious holydays and holy months in which they perform rituals such as fasting from dawn till dusk, and praying.   Islam means to submit to the complete will of god, and onewho does so is referred to as a Muslim. To be a Muslim you must first and foremost believe that no one is worth worshiping except God Almighty or Allah in the Arabic and most common referral, and that the last messenger sent by him was Mohamed (peace be upon him). This is known as the testimony of faith and is something that must be believed in the heart and said with the tongue and acted upon by your limbs. To be a Muslim you must also pray five times a day and fast in the holy month of Ramadan if you are not sick or pregnant, or travelling. If a Muslim has some sort or extra wealth then he must give charity, and shall visit the city of Mecaa in Saudi Arabia once in a lifetime for pilgrimage if they can afford it. These are the articles of faith in Islam; uphold these and you are considered a Muslim.   There are also articles of faith such as believing in God, his messengers, his book, his angels, the Day of Judgment, and his destiny weather good or bad.
