Education: a degree, level, or kind of schooling. Education is a big part of the politics and topics of today. It is more important than most anybody thinks. The sacrifices that villagers like Haji Ali made for their children’s education had a bigger impact than any American bomb ever would. Mortenson’s schools were built solely on love for the children, and the education received from these schools set the Pakistani youth free in ways they could have never dreamed of. "Once you educate the boys, they tend to leave the villages and go search for work in the cities, but the girls stay home, become leaders in the community, and pass on what they’ve learned. If you really want to change a culture, to empower women, improve basic hygiene and health care, and fight high rates of infant mortality, the answer is to educate girls"(Mortenson 209).
Even though Greg Mortenson was the idealist and leader of the CAI’s movement; however, nothing would have been accomplished without support from the Pakistanis. Village elders were willing to do anything and everything in order for their children to receive an acceptable education. Haji Ali said, “I can’t read anything. This is the greatest sadness in my life. I’ll do anything so the children of my village never have to know this feeling. I’ll pay any price so they have the education they deserve” (153).
Like the elders of the village in Pakistan the parents in the United States struggle for their children to be able to receive an acceptable education. Unlike the citizens in Pakistan who fight to build an actual school and who fight to let all children be educated the parents and adults fight their own kids to be able to get them to actually go to school. The citizens of the United States don’t understand how important it truly is to be able to have an education some see it as prison.
