World Hunger
Every day about 24,000 people die from hunger or hunger related causes. A third of these deaths are children under the age of five. One may wonder how this can be, living in a country where so much food is wasted everyday. Restaurants and grocery stores throw out food every night before closing. Many Canadiens waste food every single day in their own homes. With so much left over food in Canada how is it that 800 million people around the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition? Well in this case, is not just the rumbling in somebody’s stomach that most of us feel if we haven’t eaten for a few hours. It may be seen an inability to get enough food to eat or a failure to eat enough nutritious food products. The problem of world hunger is not that there is not enough food produced in the world. World production of grain alone is over 1.5 billion tons, enough to supply the entire world population with two pounds a day. This grain combined the current production of other food as meat, fruits, vegetables, and nuts is enough to give each adult and child on earth 3000 calories a day which is what the average Canadiens eats. Canadiens aren’t the only ones who waste food. People all around the world are doing the exact same thing. And though it seems that Canada has too much food, Canadiens have hungry people right here in our country. The world hunger problem lies in the changing conditions in the environment, population, and most of all, poverty.
