Women Of Color
According to the dictionary, beauty is nature. It gives pleasure and satisfaction to the mind and it is a characteristic of a person who is admired. The average woman is confused about what makes a woman beautiful or perfect. The picture perfect woman in the society is “independent, intelligent, submissive, respectful, and confident. A beautiful woman is classified as tan, long hair, petite, 5’7, blue eyes, nice smile, big breasts, high cheek bones, and blonde hair”. A big part of what a beautiful or a perfect woman should be is learned though the media, music videos, magazines, and TV shows like (American Next Top Model). Every culture has their own beauty ideas; so while something might be a beauty symbol in one place, it might be the complete opposite in another country. Women all over the United States desire these physical ideas. However, I view beauty as something more natural, something that cannot be defined by outer physical characteristics. Ideal beauty includes intelligence, dignity and pride, love, uniqueness, hardworking individual, and an achiever. I believe that every woman is beautiful in their own way because women have different personalities. We cannot classify or define what a perfect/beautiful woman is because we are all different; therefore, one definition of beauty seems inaccurate.
According to the novel “The Bluest Eye”, there is a constant theme of image and how women of color view themselves. In the novel, blue eyes were the main idea behind beauty. Pecola wanted blue eyes in order to be considered beautiful. She felt isolated from other people and did not feel that she belongs to the community. At the end of the novel, Pecola went crazy that she imagined herself having blue eyes. I believe that the way Pecola acted connects to how African Americans act in the 24th century.
