Winston and Julia’s Relationship
Winston and Julia’s Affair starts when Winston receives a note from Julia saying “I love you”, from there begins the rebellious affair. Their first encounter was in the country outside Air Strip One (London), it is here they first make love. Over the next couple of weeks they have a couple of meetings before Winston rents the room over Mr. Charrington's shop. Julia comes into the room with sugar, coffee, and bread, luxuries only members of the Inner Party could normally obtain. In the room Winston and Julia create a sense of home in their own perfect little world. Winston and Julia spent many joyful hours together in the room, but it was also the spot were their affair was discovered and ended.
It is in the room were we learn of Winston and Julia mutual love and respect for each other but also their differences, in particular the way they rebel and why.
While Winston simply manages to survive, Julia is a true survivalist, using any means necessary to conduct her self-centered rebellion. While Winston enjoys sex and intimacy, Julia is an outwardly sexual being and sleeps with Party members regularly, Winston tells her that the more men she has been with, the more he loves her, since it means that more Party members are committing crimes. She does not do this to destroy the Party but to quench her own desires, and that is the basic difference between Winston and Julia. His rebellion is as much for future generations as it is for himself; her rebellion is purely incidental to her own desires.
Julia is far more realistic than Winston. She understands the Party better than he does and is more cunning in the ways that she defies Party policy. While Winston is emotional about the Party and its potential downfall, Julia feels his wishes are merely fantasy and is uninterested in the Party’s view. She busies herself with getting around the Party, unlike Winston, who wishes to attack the Party at its center....
