WHY ONLINE SHOPPING PERFORM BETTER THEN TRADITIONAL RETAILER?   A new survey has revealed consumers plans to do more online shopping in the coming year.   The survey has found that of 1,957 people 36% plan to spend more money online and less on the high street this year.   This figure however, rose to 45% in the 18-24 year olds category and 44% of the big-spending 25-34 year old market.   With the credit crunch in full swing, consumers are far more price conscious and it would appear, are using the Internet to search for bargains. Many are using price-comparison sites and auction sites to get the very best deals.   Neil Mason, head of UK retail research at Mintel, said,   According to the survey, the majority of respondents (89%) believe that better prices can be found online. In addition to this, the online consumer believes that a better range of products can be found online.   These findings can certainly be understood when looking at one-time high street favourites such as Adams, Woolworths and Zavvi. All have fallen into administration, which can in part be put down to their poor web presence. Zavvi actually shut down its website, which had a significant impact on the brand.   Malcolm Pinkerton, Verdict’s senior retail analyst states “As the cost of broadband falls, consumers become more accustomed to internet shopping and retailers continue to enhance their online propositions. This channel will find itself extremely well placed to capitalize on falling consumer confidence and lower levels of disposable income currently [affecting] the retail market.”   This meant more people are now able to utilize the internet as a means of shopping.
