For the second psychology paper I have chosen to write about the movie Good Will Hunting. I’ve chosen this movie because I’ve seen it before and due to the fact that one of the main characters is a psychiatrist it relates to psychology a lot. I am going to cover a few topics about the movie in this paper. I will discuss the main psychological issue that the movie focuses on, how this issue relates to the textbook and an outside source, and then describe what is necessary to deal with the particular psychological issue in the movie.
The movie Good Will Hunting has a pretty large amount of characters that affect the outcome of the movie. The main character is a young adult from Boston named Will Hunting. The few central characters that guide Will Hunting through his coming of age are a psychologist named Sean Maguire, a MIT professor named Gerald Lambeau, a girlfriend named Skylar, and a best friend named Chuckie. Although there a few psychological issues that this movie relates to the one I’ve chosen to discuss is personality development. This is basically the movie’s plot. The movie revolves around a “headstrong, working-class genius” who in the beginning drinks a lot at the bar with his friends, gets in a fight, and
has no direction to later on through the help of a psychiatrist discovers who he is and what he wants to do in life. There are a couple instances that personality development affects the character. One instance that it affects Will Hunting is when he is at the psychiatrist and he cries because the life he has lived has hurt him emotionally. Another instance is after spending time with the psychiatrist Will Hunting takes a more assertive and productive approach to his life by going to find a girl he loves in California and using his intelligence to its potential by finding a good job instead of working as a janitor.
