Water Resource Plan Ryan Jenkins SCI/275 Archana Bansal January 26, 2009 Water Resource Planpresented in the video is that of overfishing. Overfishing occurs as the populations of fish species are severely depleted. The problem is tied in large part to the growing human population. As the worldwide population has risen so to as the amount of fish being taken from our oceans. The organization Greenpeace International suggests overfishing is the single biggest threat to marine ecosystems. Greenpeace suggests that the over-exploitation of fisheries has led to some fisheries collapsing. Further evidence of this problem is illustrated in the findings of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which keeps the United States government informed on U.S. fishery populations. In 2007 they reviewed 528 separate fish stocks and classified 179 of those stocks as overfished. So as you can see the problem is real and we must find a workable solution that helps replenish the supply of fish yet maintains the vitality of the fishing industry. My Plan Pros, Cons, and Reaction Other Issues Community Impact As to the impact my plan will have on the community. While I believe quota limits will slightly reduce the number of fishing jobs available I do believe that implementing an aquaculture program will add jobs. Jobs would also be created in the research and education aspects of my plan. No doubt moving from fishing at sea to heading an aquaculture program will cause a slight lifestyle change I don’t anticipate long lasting effects. Conclusion I believe this plan is the best possible solution for fisheries, environmentalists, fishermen and the community. It starts down the path of conservation while providing opportunities for longevity and employment in the fishing industry.
