In this day and age there are many skills that every person should possess. People need public speaking skills, internet capabilities, and a college education in order to promote themselves to a higher level. Although these skills are vital, there is one skill that is very universal. That skill is typing. Typing, according to Wikipedia, is the "process of inputting text into a device, such as a typewriter, computer, or a calculator, by pressing keys on a keyboard. It can be distinguished from other means of input, such as the use of pointing devices like the computer mouse, and text input via speech recognition." (Wikipedia) In almost every job available today there is a requirement or preference for the ability to type. Because companies have upgraded the way they do business, most companies prefer to operate and perform their daily tasks using a computer. There are numerous softwares available for companies to perform anything from accounting to shipping. This is part of the reason why knowing how to type, and type at a fast rate, is vital for everyone. Therefore knowing how to type rapidly and efficiently is a vital skill because it prepares you for any job, allows you to be flexible in schooling, and speeds up normal activities.
Jobs these days not only require typing for most jobs, but they require potential candidates to actually have a particular typing speed. The reason this is required is because companies want to be able to get things done fast and efficiently. The phrase "time is money" applies to everything these days. A position such as Administrative Assistant normally requires a candidate to be able to type anywhere from 40 words per minute (wpm) or above.
