Turning points of WWII   The battle of Midway took place in June of 1942 at Midway Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The battle was a major naval victory for the United States against Imperialist Japan. Japan’s goal was to trick the United States into a battle with a few aircraft carriers off shore, and once America engaged they would bring in the main attack force. The Americans were aware of the plan and were able to defeat the Japanese, crippling their Navy for the rest of the war. This battle was important because it all but knocked Japan out of the war as far as America was concerned.   The Battle of Stalingrad took place between July 1942 and February 1943 in Stalingrad, Russia. Nazi Germany invaded Russia to gain control of the southern city. They did this because it was a gateway to the oil rich Caucasus Region, thereby cutting off Stalin’s supply of oil and gaining themselves a limitless oil supply. They were unsuccessful in their efforts and this battle went down in history as the bloodiest battle in human history, with casualties reaching 1.5 million. This battle was important because, at the time Hitler was fighting a two-front battle. He was defending Western Europe from the advancing Allied Troops, and he had been defeated on the Eastern front by the Russians. Significantly injuring his forces and depleting Axis’ supplies.   These three events, the battle of Stalingrad, the battle of Midway and the Manhattan Project,effectively stopped the worst war the world has ever seen. Although there were many noteworthy events, these were all turning points in WWII. Without any of them the war would have lasted much longer and possibly could have had a different outcome. Who knows, I could be writing my paper in German right now.
