Margot Hadaya H – English Mr. Simpson Compare and Contrast Essay 02/03/09 Compare and Contrast Essay: Tom vs. Huck: Tom’s idea of an adventure is revolved around imaginary things like stories from a book. He uses his imagination to get away from everyday life. He imagines himself as a demon, a hero, a pirate, Robin Hood and many other characters from his books. Tom uses his imagination to make games so he can escape from boredom each day. By escaping from reality, Tom sometimes hurts people by making them go through a lot of trouble for him to be in a good home, a good school and have a proper education. Huck, on the other hand doesn’t use his imagination. He doesn’t need stories to act like a character from the story because he actually lived the fantasies Tom imagines. He is a poor un-educated motherless white boy whose father is the town’s drunkard. Many of the mothers in town do not want their kids hanging out with him because he does many bad things and is a bad influence. Tom and Huck have a very strong sense of adventure. Because they’re the same age, it makes them have more exciting ideas that have to do with their age group. They like to do a lot together. They both want to look for the treasure, they both want to follow Injun Joe, they both want to go to the tavern to find the treasure box etc... As they say: “great minds think alike”. Tom seems to like being around Huck because Huck makes him feel happy and motivated. Tom lives out his adventures with no consideration of how he hurts the people who care for him. He didn’t know that when he was pretending to be dead, so many people were going to show up at his funeral. He pushed it when he knew that Aunt Poly was going to plan a funeral for him and still wanted to surprise the town with a so-called “miracle” that he showed up in the church.
