Take a group of soldiers; let us say five for static reasons. One out of the five soldiers will likely have a tattoo somewhere on their body. Why is this? Well it depends on the person and the type of tattoo they have. Ask them why they got the tattoo and what it stands for, and you will get a variety of responses. Each tattoo tells a story. Whether it was an idea that just came to mind, or if it symbolizes something, or is just to honor a memory, there is always a reason. As a child, I was told only gang members and prison inmates got tattoos. As I got older, I grew to learn that society view tattoos as evil. While society often believes that tattoos are only for the “bad”, history shows that cultures and individuals choose to get tattoos for different reasons. Having six different tattoos as given myself has insight into the art that is known by many tattoo artists to be called “body art”.
What causes someone to apply a drawing or picture to their body that will last for the rest of their life, or until they come up with the money to remove it? Brian Jackson (2007) summed it up in five different reasons: loved one, religious, military service, mistake, and just for fun. Each tattoo tells a story. Tattoos of loved ones are mostly used for significant others or for friends and family (Brian Jackson, 2007, p.1). Today religious tattoos consist of symbols of the person’s religion; this is mostly seen on people who believe heavily in their religion (Brian Jackson, 2007, p. 1). Most soldiers have tattoos regarding the branch of service they are with and sometimes their unit (Brian Jackson, 2007, p. 1).
