Dead Poets Society is a film; it tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students to change their lives of conformity through his teaching of poetry and literature. The story is set at the Welton Academy.
Mr Keating: John Keating is the new English teacher and tells to the students to call him “Oh Captain my Captain!” if they feel audacious. His first lesson was to learn the meaning of the idea of “Carpe Diem” = seize the day.
In a later class Neil has read the introduction their poetry textbook, the chapter was called “Understanding Poetry” it describes how to place the quality of a poem on a scale, and rate it with a number. Mr. Keating finds the idea ridiculous and encourages his pupils to rip the Chapter.
To the end the pupils created an organisation called the “Dead poets society” and Mr. Keating was one of them.
What Mr. Keating changes in the boys lives
“Carpe Diem” becomes a central reference in the movie. Each boy soon seizes the day for himself. For the first time these boys come to the realization that they can be their own individual and that they can think for themselves.
Todd: He overcame his shyness, at the pointed to be a the end of the film, the brave one of the class. He is the first to shout “O captain, My captain!”
Neil Perry: Neil Perry would have never committed suicide if his dominating father, won’t private him from his acting at the theatre!
Charlie Dalton: publish an article to the school, that proposes girls be allowed at Welton. This article had for goal to give the boys pleasure, when the school, learn of it, Charlie says he acted alone. (Another act inspired of the central reference: “Carpe Diem”).
As a result, the boys think Mr Keating is a good teacher.
