The Smoking Ban In Britain
The smoking ban July the 1st 2007 the smoking ban in Britain came into effect, because of this ban it is now illegal to smoke in almost all enclosed public or semi private place, including pubs, clubs, buses, trains work vehicles used by more than one and workplaces. The opinions regarding this new law are very much divided. I will give and outline on some of the different positions regarding this subject. One of the texts I have read concerning this new law used a lot of exaggeration and irony which I would like to illustrate and comment on, furthermore I would like to discuss whether society has the responsibility to prevent people or if it is up the individual decide. Outline of the different positions I will begin with an article praising the smoke ban. The text is known as: “Benefits of smoke ban will be felt at once”. Robin McKie the author of the text tells about the effects of smoking bans in other countries and areas few years prior to the new ban in Britain. He gives examples on how it has reduced the number of heart attacks and lung cancer reports in Italy, Colorado, Ohio and other areas where smoking bans where exercised. Robin is not only speaking well of smoking ban when it comes to non-smokers being victims of second hand smoke. According to his sources most smokers have a desire for quitting the tobacco, 46 per cent are actively trying to quit while more than 70 per cent say they want to stop. Sir Richard Peto states. “There is good and bad news about smoking. The bad news is that the situation is bad, the good news is that it used to be worse.” It is clear however that public smoking has now become an outdoor activity, while the rainy weather continues to spread across the UK. The smoking ban is, according to robin, a very good thing both for smokers and non-smokers. British novelist and biographer A. N. Wilson has another comment on the whole smoking ban situation.
