“A slave is a person who has no rights and is the property of another person. A slave is a person who is forced to work for another. A slave is not free.” (Michigan Opera Theatre) Slavery had actually started with the Old Testament of the Bible, when Joseph was being sold by his brothers. By 1619 slaves started to come to America, arriving at Virginia, one of the 13 colonies. In 1808 Congress bans the importation of slaves from Africa, and in 1820 the Missouri Compromise bans slavery north of the southern boundary of Missouri. Then in 1854 Congress passes the Kansa-Nebraska Act, establishing the territories of Kansa and Nebraska. The legislation repels the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and renews tensions between anti- and proslavery factions. In the year 1863 President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring “that all persons held as slaves” within the Confederate state “are, and henceforward shall be free.” By 1865; President Lincoln issued the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolishes slavery. On June 19, 1865 slavery in the United States effectively ended when 250,000slaves in Texas received the news that the Civil War had ended two months earlier.
