Romeo And Juliet: Act 3 Scene 5

Explain and assess the significance of act three, scene five as a whole.
Act three, scene five is made up of 4 duologues which are moments when two characters talk and express their feelings. The four duologues are between Romeo and Juliet, Lady Capulet and Juliet, Lord Capulet and Juliet and finally the nurse and Juliet. This scene is seen as pivotal throughout the rest of the play because there are some decisions to be made by Juliet as to which path she takes and with all this taking place in the same room it emphasises the effect. This is because when she is with Romeo, she feels safe and playful. Then when Juliet hears her parents have organised the wedding for her she is shocked and angry which is then followed by Lord Capulet becoming aggressive towards her which makes Juliet very scared. When the nurse who has raised her from birth, doesn’t stick up for her she is left wallowing in all her different emotions such as loneliness, abandonment and self-pity. To start with Romeo and Juliet are together on the balcony. This is a very tense moment for the audience because at this point Romeo is a wanted man due to the murder of Tybalt and Romeo and Juliet are together in Juliet’s house. Lord or Lady Capulet could walk in at any moment. Despite all this tension the couple are relaxed with Juliet trying to persuade Romeo to stay by saying it is night not morning. They both realise that their relationship is a serious situation but they are so besotted with each other that Juliet wants him to stay. Juliet attempts to get Romeo to stay by saying it is not the sun that rises, but it is a meteor from the sun. This is a good line because in those days meteors were still not proven to exist so it shows Juliet is trying everything, no matter how bizarre, to get him to stay. In this duologue Romeo seems to be more realistic because he says “I must be gone and live, or stay and die.” This is an example of binary couplets which is an emphasis on the many decisions Juliet...
