Relationship promoters and gatekeepers in R&D - different roles?

Abstract

The aim of this seminar paper is to discuss whether relationship promoters and technology gatekeepers play different roles in the development of new innovations within R&D departments. As the innovation process is often very complex and is dependent upon the decision making of multiple persons working together, it faces many different administrative barriers due to the novel nature of the technical solutions presented, as obstacles in the form of cooperation difficulties between project members surface. These difficulties lead to a need to have specific individuals within a firm who apply their experience and contacts to help enable project teams to carry out their work effectively and with all the information relevant to their project.
In the following seminar paper the promoter model specific to R&D is explained, with a view on shedding light on the issue presented above, as a basis for a description of relationship promoters and technology gatekeepers. A definition of each role is presented followed by each of their functions, including an explanation of how each role helps to overcome organisational barriers through the organisational know-how, social skills and networking competence of the individual taking on this duty. A mention of the requirements necessary to carry out this role helps to describe what kind of people typically take on these functions within an organisation. Finally, a direct comparison is made between their similarities and differences to arrive at a conclusion on whether they have strictly different roles and characteristics or whether they could be combined into a single function.
