The theme of the movie is typified by the very first scene, watching Jim playing with what seems like trash in a child like manner. We are about to witness a coming of age tale under extremely difficult situations. The main crisis of the film is the lack of a father figure, a role model, a protector showering affection and love. The director, Nicholas Ray in a sense was trying to send out a wake up call. The priorities of the time were to consume all you can for yourself as fast as you can. The previous generations had just gone thru the depression and wars. Prosperity and extravagance was the priority. People were living in denial, desperately trying to escape the horrors of the past. The economy was booming, families were gaining economic power having baby after baby. People were experiencing a leisure time they never had known. Parents were sending their adolescent children out into a world they were ill prepared for. The generations before the 1950s teenagers were not concerned about becoming complete, well balanced individuals with the mental psyche strong enough to cope with the world. Their main goal was survival from wars, starvation and illness. Physical fortitude was the priority.
In the first scenes of the movie we are introduced to the major characters and exposed to the source of their angst and destructive coping mechanisms. With Jim, it’s his family dynamics. There is a power struggle ensuing with Jim’s grandmother holding the reigns, her opinion never goes missed.
