May Jones   University of Indianapolis   Evidence Base Practice Paper   Peer Mediation   Peer mediation helps to resolve conflicts, helps with listening skills, identifying desired outcomes, brainstorming possible solutions, finding some common interests and goals, and setting on a plan of action. Peer mediation provides meetings to discuss private issues and concerns. This allows for direct the process more easily. Peer Mediation allows for introduction and getting ground rules established, hearing each other’s story. After each person has talked about their issues, they can say what he/she would like to do or see something different. Together they can discuss possible solutions and describe how the conflict might be resolved and avoided in the future.   Bully Proofing the School   The Bully Proofing your school program is a system wide program that seeks to make an impact when the context of bullying occurs. It also adds elements of teaching protective skills to the students and influencing the school climate by engaging the caring majority. The Bully Proofing program happens in three stages, stage one creates the foundation for awareness that the program exist. You assess the climate of the school, providing information about what bullying is and how to identify it, making the entire school aware of the no tolerance for bullying. Stage two involves protective skills and techniques to classroom groups to help students learn strategies for dealing with various kinds of bullying behaviors and to increase their resistance to victimization. Stage three develops the climate throughout the school throughpromoting a caring majority. The students who areneither bullies nor victims are taught to stand up for victims with the promise of adult support. Thus the silent majority is converted to a caring majority of students who do not tolerate bullying.
