Power
There are three bases of formal power Coercive reward and legitimate and two bases of personal power Expert and Referent. I find that the power of Rewards with a touch of Expert works best when I at home working with the kids. I find that the power of a reward can usually persuade a young child to comply with you faster if you have something they want. I will usually negotiate 30 minutes of television time for most things that need to be done. When working I find that I tend to use coercive power. I work for Telematics Company in the Information technology department installing servers. I am the only female in a group of men. I can normally intimidate most of the guys with threats of bodily harm when we’re on a time schedule dealing with a big project. I must admit that I am not very proud of the tactics that must be used, and I try to use them only when absolutely necessary. For example we received a request to install and configure 20 new servers and three weeks to get them done instead of getting started the guys thought we only need a week and a half without anytime allotted in case of error, needless to say we spent a lot of unwanted overtime fixing errors before reaching that deadline. I would prefer to improve my leadership skills with a gentle combination of Expert and referent powers. I would start out with knowledge and expertise of my job, so that my coworkers come to me with questions and their respect and admiration.
