Operations And Logistics For Kudler Fine Foods
Kudler Fine Food, founded by Kathy Kudler in 1998, is a local upscale specialty food store located in the San Diego metropolitan area. The company has three locations in southern San Diego County. Each store has approximately 16,000 square feet of retail space located in a fashionable shopping center (University of Phoenix, 2007). The stores are stocked with the very best domestic and imported foodstuffs and divided into five departments consisting of a fresh bakery and pastries, fresh produce, fresh meat and seafood, condiments and packaged foods and lastly cheese's and specialty dairy products. Kudler Fine Food's mission is to provide their customers with the finest in selected foodstuffs, wines, and related needs in an unparalleled consumer environment (University of Phoenix, 2007). In order to develop this mission, Kudler Fine Foods has decided to enter into contracts with local organic farmers to provide fresh organic produce to Kudlers' stores.
Kudler Fine Foods has several significant concerns in terms of Operations and Logistics, which include but is not limited to quality control and standards, operations management systems, supply chain methodology, distribution process, and enterprise resource planning.
Quality Control and Quality Standards
One important aspect of operations and logistics is purchasing. Although there is no purchasing department in any of the Kudler Fine Foods' stores, standard purchasing procedures are in place.
The store managers from each Kudler Fine Food location determines what to buy and places a purchase order “directly with suppliers using a purchase order form that is standard between the three stores.”(UOP) The goal of purchasing is not just to purchase any items for selling but to make sure you get what you need and in the quality and quantity.
