Native Americans
I have recently have spoken with a woman, that is card holding
member of the Cherokee Tribe. After discussing several things for this topic, she informed me
that they and all tribes prefer to be called Indians, rather than Native Americans. She explained
the reasoning for this being; anyone born in the United States is a Native American. She
informed me that the census form has American Indian on it and they prefer to be called
American Indians. I still will be referring throughout this essay as Native American, since this is
the topic of this paper.
This essay is a look into the early lives of Native Americans (Indians) and what they had to
go through in order to survive in the early days. Is there anything we can do that will help the
Native Americans heal and feel accepted in today’s society? This essay will also tell about how
today’s Native Americans are surviving and are being educated in today’s society so they can

heal and help contribute as American citizens. As a civilized society, why do we have trouble
accepting the Native Americans? As Americans, we do not understand what the Native
Americans have had to overcome over many years; to survive in today’s society.
In 1838 the “Trail of Tear’s” began. In the middle of the winter, the United States
government seized many Native Americans homes in the Southern Appalachians and forced
them to relocate to Oklahoma. They were relocating to an area where their surroundings and
elements would be completely different for them. This was just one of many concerns for the
