Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were in one sense very similar men, they both wanted the same thing but in different ways. They were both born during the time when racism was at its peak in the USA, however MLK was born into a pleasant middleclass family, whereas Malcolm X was born the a rough area into a poor, disturbed family. MLK grew up to be very smart and skipped a few years because of it. He was early to realise that whites were superior to Blacks after he was separated from his to white friends. He gained many degrees such as a Doctor of Philosophy compared to Malcolm X who grew up inadequately. His fathered was murdered for his views on racism when Malcolm was young. As a result his mother suffered an emotional breakdown therefore Malcolm was to be put into foster care – separately from his other siblings. He then became addicted to cocaine and was placed in prison for burglary. During his time in prison he Islam and changed his surname to X because he considered Little to be his slave name.
Malcolm X thought of himself and his followers as Black Nationalist Freedom Fighters and viewed the “white supremacists” as enemies. He would hold speeches and talk about the Whites hiring the Blacks as slaves and promising false promises. He believed that they should stay away from their enemies and start their own community with their own government and navy. Segregation. On the other hand MLK would preach and organise marches and sit-ins to deliver his message for the end of racial segregation and racial discrimination. As a result he became the youngest person ever to win a noble peace prize for his non-violent work.
