Mitigation Strategies And Solutions
Never thought of saying goodbye to baseball? Better prepare for it from now since the white ash tree, from which all baseball bats are made, are in danger of disappearing, and this is due to global warming (New York Times 2007). Global warming, one of the environmental problems of atmospheric issues, has been paid more attention to in recent years. What is global warming, and what can human do to mitigate this problem?
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth’s temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. Khandekar defines the term global warming in 2005 as increase in the mean surface temperature of the earth, and is due to increasing human activity and increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide and other air pollution. These gases work like very thick blanket which trap the sun’s heat and cause the planet to warm up. Data from Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) reflected that coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution, which produce 2.5 billion tons every year. The second on rank is automobiles, which creates nearly 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year.
What are these numbers refer to, or in the other word, what are the effects for both nonliving and living factors caused by global warming? Warmer climate has caused and is causing many problems in the whole world, for instance, severe drought, floods in the costal areas, stronger hurricanes, and dropping snow accumulation. Of course there are lots of effects to name besides these. The ones listed in the above are considered as nonliving factors, then the living factors that are affected by global warming, for example, death caused by extreme heat, famine resulted from changed pattern of agriculture, and extinction of species due to the disruption of habitats.
Besides these effects related with global warming, the...
