Meaning Of Photography
Photography could be considered one of the world’s greatest inventions and has caused many controversies over whether or not it is an art form. Many argue that photography is only a reproduction of an image, and if it were an actual art form it would need redefinition. To consider it art, one must determine what component of a photograph makes it beautiful to the viewer. But what is photography? According to the, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photography,“Photography is the art process of producing images of objects on photosensitive surfaces.” A paragraph written by John Tagg quotes, “Photography as such has no identity. Its status as a technology varies with nature as a practice depends on the institution and agents which define it and set it to work. Its functions as a mode of cultural production is tied to definite conditions of existence and its products are meaningful and legible only within the particular currencies they have” (Tagg 5). Tagg is trying to assert that photography cannot be understood and it is best if you regard it as a dispersed and dynamic field of technologies. When one sees a photograph, an immediate thought of what the photograph can be about emerges into their head. A photograph speaks for itself whether the artist cares to explain what it means or not. Photography is a technological device, yes, but it can also be a lifestyle, a way of explaining and describing what you cannot explain inside your mind. It captures the memories, feelings and moments in life.
Knowing the history of photography can help one better understand it and find out why it has become such a controversial subject as to whether or not it is an art form. Photography can be found everywhere; it shares many aspects of life.
