“Compare and Contrast the attitudes of The Scientific School of Management thought (Taylor et al) with those of the Human Relations Movement (Mayo et al) with regard to people at work”
Introduction
When we hear the word ‘Management’ immediately we start thinking of relative terms like time management, resource management etc. Basically, we are managing some or the other aspect of our lives. But in organisations management means a lot more. In this essay we shall look at two important genres of management. First being Scientific School of Management with great emphasis on the works of its pioneer Frederick Winslow Taylor. Second, we would look at the Human Relations Movement with Elton Mayo and other prominent figures as well. In addition, we would be looking at the similarities and differences of these schools and the point where the merge.
Scientific School of Management thought (Taylor et al)
Born in Philadelphia, 1856, F.W Taylor was the founder of Scientific Management. During his years of apprenticeship and later in his work span in Midvale steel works he learned that practices adopted by employees and employers were not really helping the organisation to prosper but in fact were being a barrier for the same. He noticed the lack of inefficiency of management and unprolific behaviour from the workers side, which led to some of his conclusions as mentioned below (Donnelly, 2008).
Taylor realised the significance of associating management with science to eradicate soldiering and increase in efficiency. According to him implementation of laws would profit an organisation. His objective of Scientific Management is visible in his four principles:
1. Replacement of the rule-of-thumb work methods with methods based on a scientific study of the tasks, i.e. by breaking down or by simplification of tasks into smaller tasks. This would help the worker to perform the tasks given at hand faster.
