Magic
What is the draw of magic for the human race? Is it the interest of the unknown or a deep religious need for knowledge, when more traditional religions do not appeal to your soul? Throughout history, there has been a large amount of research done to both prove and disprove magic, whether the topic has begun with the Wiccan religion, Haitian Voodoo and the witch craft that is seen on television, such as popular series Charmed or the Harry Potter series, written by J.K.Rowling. Whether the person using magic is a teenager who is trying out Wicca, or an adult that does not believe in traditional religion, magic is all around us, in everything we see and do.
All magic is based on beliefs from pre-modern scientific times. During those times, it was believed that supernatural forces of good and evil filled the world, influencing the actions and thoughts of people. Our ancestors in those times believed that some natural incidents, such as ran, were helpful to them and were brought by the good spirits. Other incidents, such as fire or lightening, were harmful to their existence, and were brought on by malevolent spirits. Unseen forces were believed to operate through human beings, and those people were either seen as useful and friendly or unfriendly and hurtful to the people and land around them.
It was also believed that people could be affected by manipulating an image or symbol. Often times, the desire to harm someone who us stronger than ourselves gives people immense satisfaction and a feeling of confidence in us. Most of the time, these acts of violence through spells or dolls comes from the sheer frustration within their own lives, and feel good when they can bend someone’s will to match their own. People can also be manipulated by the words and emotions of others. The spoken work can bring out feelings and memories, or specific feelings of love and hate. All languages, not just the English language, are the most effective use of symbolism in effect.
