Machine Stops
Firstly, Science fiction is always set in the future and is based around technology. Also they usually contain an advanced way of living or the opposite, for example where humans have managed to create an uninhabitable earth. Furthermore some Science Fiction films have a plot that humankind are forced to rely on technology where people are forced to live in an Dystopian society relying on machines. Dystopia is the word for where society is imperfect.
Another scenario is where Technology becomes so advanced it develops a mind for its own like emotions, dreams or anything that is unique to a human being, I, robot is a good example of this.
The Machine Stops is a Science Fiction short story because the setting is in the future from the time it was written. The Machine stops was written in 1909.
Forster has predicted the future since 1909 very accurately. The inventions she has used in the book are much like the devices we use now. The “Blue Plate” the she uses is the same as video massaging which is mentioned on the second page “Vashti watched his face in the blue plate” which is computers or mobiles in today's terms. She has also invented public air-ships which today we call air planes, cars and lifts.
Vashti is the mother of Kuno, her son and others not mentioned personally. She is very obsessed with “the Machine” the “God” of this story and dislikes human touch whether it be a hand shake or a kiss this is proved when she is steadied by the attendant “she put out her hand to steady her. “How dare you!” Vashti exclaims”. As all humans are bold so is she and also has no teeth. She dislikes nature this is portrayed in the air-sip as she travels to Kuno “She hides the Himalayas behind a metal blind.”
