The Ritual
Rituals can often be viewed as a habit or regularities. It is evident that each religion is some sort ritual that we all can relate to. Religion holds a day which is designated to favor the lord. For Catholics, like me, that day is Sunday. The Mormons also use Sunday. Judaism asks for Saturday to be spent in accordance with certain rules such as not driving a car. Muslims religion has made Friday a day for prayer and religion. Every Friday, Muslims from all over, take part in elaborating rituals. These rituals are considered normal to most Americans. However, imagine having a ritual that is barbaric that stones are to be thrown at you to indicate good harvesting. Most would think that is crucial, insane and stupid. However, the short story “The Lottery” is a small American town where the locals display a strange and serious mood of this ritual that is held on June 27th. There were many similarities that I noticed from the lottery that can be related to the Catholic faith.
Reading this short story I was amazed of how crucial this ritual was. I also did not except that the small community, approx of three hundred, would think this would be normal. After each family draws a small piece of paper, one slip with black indicates the Hutchinson family has been chosen. When each of the family draws again to see which family member “wins,” Tessie Hutchinson was the one chosen. The irony to the story is Tessie was the one that enjoyed the ritual of the lottery. When she was chosen she didn’t think it was fair. According to the belief of the of the community she was then stoned to death by everyone present, including her own family, and young boys and girls to indicate the sacrifice of good harvest.
Another thing that I found disturbing was when children gather the smoothest stones they can find; the smoothest stones will actually cause a slower and painful death. This piece of disturbance is also compared to a torture device when...
