Lord Of The Flies General Information
Lord of the Flies is a phenomenal novel written by William Golding and is about choirboys who must survive together. The setting Golding has placed these kids in a tropical island. He chose an island because one of his goals was to create a microcosm of what is happening in the adult world of the novel. Because he has created this microcosm on the island, each of the main character holds a strong quality of society. The four main characters of the novel are Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and Simon. Ralph is the charismatic, popular child of the group so he is the leader based on a democracy. Jack is the physical strength, bully type and overthrows Ralph later in the novel because of his greatest strength, the ability to kill with no mercy. Piggy is the intelligent, outcast of the novel. He is Ralph's second in command and is the brains of Ralph's operations but can never get respect because he has no physical use in the microcosm. He has asthma, wears glasses, and is quite husky. Simon is the mother and religion in the microcosm. He takes care of the younger children and has Christ like features. He uses these qualities to display the greater evil in society and cause the reenactment of what is happening in the adult world.
Adults must have an occupation in order to survive in the world. Society is based on survival of the fittest. If you are not strong enough to hold your job, someone who is strong enough will take it. Ralph started strong enough to be leader, but as time went by, he began to lose the majority to the opposing party, Jack. Jack becomes leader and Ralph has no occupation so he is holding on by a strand to survive. Jack becomes leader because of his ability to kill. He proved to the majority what his purpose was on the island while Ralph was still figuring out what his purpose was. In a battle between physical power and political power, killing is better than being civil.
