Creating an adaptation of a film is not easy. I do not believe Peter Brook’s adaptation is a complete failure, although it could have been a lot better. A successful adaptation is only made when it reaches the readers’ needs. For example, the reader may have a certain imagination about the characters. This is crucial for any adaptation. To reach the expectations of the characters created in the minds of the readers. An adaptation must also have the same atmosphere as in the book. Peter Brook’s adaptation is poor concerning both atmosphere and characterisation.
Concerning the characters in the Lord of the Flies, there are two goals an adaptation must reach. One is to have the characters look as the readers imagine them. The other is the acting of the characters to be flawless. These goals are hard to accomplish since it is hard to know how readers imagine the characters to be, although not impossible. The acting is hard for the characters since they all are children. In my opinion, the resemblance of the characters from the adaptation reaches my imagination. But the acting, however, is poor and annoying to watch, particularly Ralph, who is one of the most important actors in this story. In the book, we are taken into Ralph’s world and we discover is thoughts and feelings. In the adaptation, however, we do not get a feel of how Ralph is feeling or what he is thinking. His acting is so poor that he can not even communicate his feelings through body movement or sound. This part annoys me and makes the adaptation poorer.
In Golding’s novel, you read in detail about the atmosphere. In the adaptation, you would like to see the same as you had imagined. This, however, is not accomplished well. You get a good feel of the surroundings in the adaptation, and you see the same environment as you had imagined in the book.
