I have identified the social, political, familial, economic, religious, and linguistic conventions of four separate groups; Cubans, Mexican Americans, El Salvadorians, and Puerto Ricans whom all share Spanish as a language. Although some of the groups have different dialects and others have different pronunciations for the same word, they are all still classified under the one title, “Hispanic American”.
Mexican Americans:
Mexican American speech, sometimes referred to as “Spanglish” or “Tex-Mex”, is a way of code-switching, or combining, English and Spanish when speaking.
The Mexican American war, fought among Mexico and the United States between the years of 1846 and 1848, was a result of the annexation of Texas from the United States. During the Mexican-American war Mexico claimed ownership of Texas, a breakaway province, and declined to acknowledge the secession or subsequent 1836 victory by the Texas military. The Mexican-American war was the first major war motivated by the belief that Americans held a God-given right to make their boundaries expand from “sea to shining sea”, causing an immense amount of suffering for many Mexicans. The Mexican American Civil Rights Movement had so many different issues behind it varying from farm worker’s rights, to voting; land grants to enhanced education, and included the fight for political rights.
Social behavior of Mexican Americans shows that the group simply wants what every immigrant group wants when they arrive in the United States in search of the American dream (Nevarez, 2001). James Adams describes[pic]“that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement….” (Adams, 1931).
