Leggo My Ego

Psychoanalysis designates three things: a method of mind investigation, a therapy of neurosis, and a new standalone discipline that is based on the knowledge acquired from applying the investigation method and clinical experiences. There is nothing vague in the definition of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a specific mind investigation technique and a therapy inspired from this investigation (Psychoanalysis- Definition, pars. 6-7) . Psychoanalysis is not merely an idea that became known over time. It is the birth child of Sigmund Freud, one of the greatest minds of the 17th century.
Freud is most remembered for his work on the belief of the unconscious. This includes all the things that are not easily available to awareness, including many things that have their origins there, such as drives or instincts (Boeree, par. 14) . This adamant belief in the unconscious and its workings ultimately led Freud to develop a therapy initiative that would explore this very belief. One of the greatest developments from this therapy was the idea of dream analysis. Dream analysis lowers the mind’s resistance level against the unconscious and enables previously unknown thoughts to come into view in a symbolic form (Boeree, par. 20) . These thoughts ultimately construct a sort-of “self-wanted being”, a self-perceived ultimate individual that one desires to become. It is through these desires that one begins to view their own mind as an extension of both their normal, everyday self and the super individual that their dreams provide. Psychoanalysis combines these two selves and compares the underlying causes for the differences between the two selves.
When Psychoanalysis is transformed into a literary criticism, it contains the same basic principles of the philosophy itself. Psychoanalytic critics take the ideas of a particular psychoanalytic thinker and observe the text of a work as if it is part of a dream.
