Whether it's typing a school report or surfing the Internet, you may be spending lots of hours at the computer. By learning about the causes and prevention of repetitive stress injuries now, you can protect yourself from future injury.
These are ten ways to prevent repetitive stress injuries.
• Sit straight your the chair
• Slouching or crouching over the keyboard can place undue stress upon your neck, back, or spine and this can lead to a repetitive stress injury.
• Taking frequent breaks is also an important step in preventing repetitive stress injuries.
• In addition, you should maintain a 90-degree angle between the wrists and elbows and the upper part of her arms. Fingers and wrists should remain level while typing.
• Use a light touch when typing. Place the keyboard close to you so that you don't have to reach for it.
• Try an ergonomic ("ergonomic" means specially designed for comfort) keyboard that has a curved design, and use a trackball instead of a mouse.
• Arrange your computer so that the screen is at eye level.
• Let your legs rest comfortably with your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest. (To test whether your legs are in a good position, try placing a pencil on your knee — the pencil should roll toward your waist, not off of your knee.)
• If you must use a laptop, use a mouse.
• Adjust your chair so that knees are level with hips (or a little higher than hips).
