Despite the fact that Bead Bar is young in age, this young company has been growing strong since its debut in 1998. Started by Meredith S. in New Canaan, Connecticut back in 1998, Bead Bar is a studio where customers can sit down at the bar and create necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry with materials provided by the Bead Bar Studio (Malaga, 2005). Since then, Bead Bar has grown into six studios scattered around the northeastern U.S with five more franchises in major cities all around the country, from Los Angeles to Miami. Add to that the Bead Bar on Board division, which provides Bead Bar services to cruise ship passengers, the eight different departments that manage the crucial day to day operations of the company, and the 35 full and part-time employees, and you have a company that is in dire need of an electronic Information System.
Even though the company has expanded to its current size, the company employees still use a paper-based system to record all of the company information. This system, although effective at the start of the company, is now inadequate for its current size, because of problems such as lost shipments, incorrect invoices and fulfillment delays. Since this is the case I believe that a computer network is the solution to this problem. With a network, Bead Bar will be able to keep track of shipments and inventory of their studios from headquarters by storing that information into a database. Additionally, a computer network will allow the company to keep track of other vital operations, such as marketing, managing employee information, keeping track of expenses, and since the studios are going to be wired to the network, they will have access to some of that valuable information contained in the database as well.
