Importance of Family Tradition
Going through my high school career I was always interested in higher education. College gives people many opportunities to succeed in life and offers the necessary tools to survive in this world. It always baffled me why my parents and generations above them didn’t attend college. Only a few of my family members even have their high school diploma. Since no one in my family went to college I was sort of hesitant at first. I also became very nervous during the application process. I didn’t know what to expect and had no one to help me along but myself. Having talked with a majority of my family about my decision to go to college, I got many mixed feelings and many different opinions. At worst they said, “What, you think you’re better than us?” (Answer: Yes, yes I am, jokingly). Knowing how some of my family felt, I got a little bit upset and a lot more motivated. At best they admired my courage and fortitude and promised lots of sweet graduation gifts. I want the satisfaction of having my children wanting to attend college just like myself. I am the first to go to college in my family but not the last since I am starting that family tradition.
Aside from what my family thought of me going to college I knew I was opening up a world of possibilities and opportunities, not only for myself but for my family as well. I can admit the process can be scary but that’s because it was new to me and to my family. Yes, I got hesitant at first as will anyone in the same position as me. I thought about getting an acceptable job and make a honest living while raising a couple of children, but I wanted a lot more in life. I could follow the footsteps of my family members and take the easy route or go out there and expand my mind and open up doors that they will never get to open.
