According to an article in Newsweek, of the August 20-27 issue, Vladimir Putin is attempted to regulate the history books of Russia. He is attempting to gloss over the atrocities of the former Soviet Union, by an effort to make schoolchildren “proud of their motherland”! This ongoing attempt is done by sanitizing school history textbooks, systematically eliminating the atrocities committed by the Stalinist regime. Is this a sign of the economic and cultural problems occurring in the USSR?
The over through of the Monarchy in 1917, while violent in nature, was not sudden. It was a violent overthrow ending with the alleged assassination of the Czar and his family; it did spread from the cities into the countryside. Thus Stalin came to power in 1917; his government was a communistic type of government. However, Stalin maintained his power with the killing or imprisonment of anyone that did not agree with the new type of government put into place during the “so called communist” coo. This government attempted to provide for the masses, in that it tried to provide housing, food and medical attention for its citizens. Thus a culture of “the government will provide” was established.
During the fall of the Iron Curtain (the USSR, and all of its allegiant countries) was immediate. There was no transition, as in the past. During the revolution of 1917, there were some people that were self reliant, infact it could be said that a majority of the people living outside of the major cities were some what self reliant, as most of these people live on farms. It was not until the late 1920’s that the full impact of the new “Communist “regime had its impact on the entire country. Infact, the designations of its countries, had its links back to Imperialist t Russia.
