Hills Like White Elephants Hemmingway
HILLS LIKE WHITE ELEPHANTS
Many works of literature use contrasting places to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the meaning of the work. For example comparing two countries, two cities, two towns, two houses, land, or sea. One work that is an example of this is “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway.
In the story of “Hills Like White Elephants” the two places that are being contrasted are the hot, dry, desert and the beautiful, cool, plains. The areas are completely opposite. The desert is dry, hot, sandy, lifeless region. Meanwhile the mountainous plains are cool, moist, colorful, full of life. These two areas are representing the conflict or subject of the story. Life. Should the couple keep the baby or have the operation and get ride of it. The comparison is if they have the operation that it would be represented by the lifeless desert, but if they decide to keep the baby that is shown by the beautiful full of life plains. This comparison contributes to the meaning of the story because it give the mother a foreshadow of what there lives would if they either lifestyle. The lifestyle of the lively, beautiful plains is the best way to go, because if things don’t work out there is always a way out. If you automatically take the way out you will always wonder what would have happened if you took the other route. Well in the example of “Hills Life White Elephants”, the couples lifestyle is not really family stable and is just one of the many exception to choosing the desert lifestyle.
