Running head: Gun Safety
Gun Safety and Control
Almost 80% of Americans think it’s important to reduce children’s access to guns. If this many people think its important then why are we not doing anything? In 2005, there were 16,298 kids injured by a firearm, and an additional 14,052 kids were injured from BB or pellet guns. (Hart, July 1999) That’s a lot of injuries for 80% of Americans to look past. This is why it’s important for more gun safety courses and knowledge about guns to be given to younger people ages 5-18. For those of you who know none, there are a minimum of ten, also known as the Ten Commandments of Gun Safety. Knowing that a gun is not a toy and that they must be handled properly is very important. You should never handle a gun without adult supervision. You should never mix alcohol, or drugs with firearms. Keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction is always a good idea. You should never point the muzzle at anyone for any reason, or anything unless you plan on shooting it. Always make sure that the muzzle is clear of obstructions before shooting. Never alter your firearm, leave it as it is. If it didn’t come that way it isn’t supposed to be that way. Have your firearm serviced often. When you have a professional check your firearm it’s...
