Green House Gas Emissions (8Th Grade)
Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Since the 1800’s the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has gone up by 25%; CH4 has risen by 150%. Carbon dioxide causes 9-26% of the greenhouse gas effect. Increases in greenhouse gas emissions like these can affect our atmosphere and contribute to global warming. How can we reduce greenhouse gas emissions before they seriously damage our atmosphere?
An average American car consists of an internal combustion engine and emits about 1.192 pounds of CO2e (measure that expresses amount of carbon dioxide being emitted) per mile. A hybrid has internal combustion engine and a rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery allows you to drive your car without using gas 100% of the time. Because you are not burning as much fossil fuel, your car emits only .530 pounds of CO2e per mile. Even though hybrids are more efficient than the average car there is still something better. Plug-in hybrid vehicles emit smaller amounts of greenhouse gases than the average American car or hybrid. It only emits .441 pounds of Co2e per mile. These are some more statistics from Google.org’s Recharge IT program:
