Great Gatsby
`Happiness and money are the most important themes in “The Great Gatsby”. Mostly every character was either seeking happiness or money sometime throughout the story. Happiness and money most of the time are closely associated but sometimes that isn’t the case. At first it money be helpful and bring happiness but it can also sometimes change people into a totally different person with insensitive and awful morals.
Gatsby is one of the more changed characters in the story once he gets involved with money. In the beginning he is looking for happiness and he feels thatDaiseycould bring that to him. But the downside to that is the fact that socially they couldn’t be together. He felt that to be with her he needed to make money to impress her or so they could just be together. He also threw very luxurious parties almost every weekend and this was how he intended to raise his social status to her level. Having money or being in the social class that he was in had its perks such as when the police pulled him over he just flashed his name card and everything became fine. When he was young he worked for a very rich man so it probably influenced how he would live his life while he was rich. The one thing that he didn’t realize till it was to lateisthat money can only be helpful and fun for so long until it eitherchanges you or changes your friends into a different person. If he had found happiness in the beginning when he was an “Average Joe” he probably would have lived a better and more fulfilling life.
Some of the less important characters such as Myrtle, Tom, andKlispringerare also affected by money in a bad way. Myrtle is married to George who is in a pretty bad place in financial terms. Disregarding the fact that she was married, she had an ongoing affair with Tom Buchanan who is a very wealthy person. He is also married but feels that for some reason he has a right to have affairs.
