“A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor starts with the grandmother convincing his only son Bailey and his family to go to Tennessee for vacation instead Florida, because a criminal called The Misfit is aloose and is heading towards Florida, and also, the children have already been to Florida and they should know different parts of the world. One of the kids, John Wesley says that the grandmother should stay home if she does not want to go, and June Star says that the grandmother would never stay home, because she is afraid to miss anything and always goes wherever the family goes. The next morning the grandmother was the first one in the car, she has taken the cat with her knowing that Bailey, his son doesn’t like to take the cat on trips. As the family begins their vacation trip, the grandmother writes down the mileage on the odometer because she thinks it will be interesting to know how far they have traveled. The children pass the time reading comic books while their mother sleeps. Then they start making bad comments about Georgia. The grandmother gets offended and tells them not to talk about her native state that way. She tells them that when she was younger, children had respect for their elders and their native states. John Wesley and June Star start playing a game guessing what the clouds look like, then they began fighting and slapping each other. The grandmother offers to tell them a story if they will keep quiet. She tells them about a man who courted her, His name was Edgar Atkins Teagarden, and every Saturday he would bring her a watermelon with his initials E.A.T. carved on it. One Saturday a black boy saw the watermelon with the initials EAT, and he ate it. The family stops at a restaurant called The Tower for barbecued sandwiches. Inside June Star was tap dancing.
