I have read the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm symbolizes Russia and Soviet Union under Communist Party Rule, but it could also stand for any common human society. The Animals in the farm are tired of the farmer so they arrange a revolution to force the farmer to leave the farm. At first everything is perfect, the living conditions improve considerably and all the animals are equal. Everyone works together and solidarity was very important. However, after a while the pigs start to take more and more control and have more influence than the other animals. At the end the pigs behave themselves exact the same way as the old farmer and the whole animal farm turns into a terrible dictatorship. The book reflects society and describes how people manipulate ideologies to their own benefit. I intend to take a look of the ways that corruption and class stratification is portrayed and also the setting of the novel. I will pick out characteristic features of 20th century and find out how it’s portrayed in the book.
In this novel Orwell shows us how important the language is and how easy you can be swindled by it – if you are not observant and aware of the consequences of your decisions. In the beginning of the book all the Animals approve and embrace the Majors ideal of socialism. Shortly after the death of the Major the pigs successively take more control of the farm. The pig Snowball shares Old Majors ideas and thoughts and is respected by almost all the animals in the farm expect from those led by Napoleon. The pigs led by Napoleon started to twist the meanings of the Seven Commandments written by Snowball. One of the main principal in the farm was “all animals are equal” but Napoleon changed the Commandments to his benefit. “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others”. Napoleon did not only change the commandment, he also put the pigs in the elite by using the word some, thus the pigs considering themselves as privileged....
